Innovation for Health

Conceptual Design Award nominated Care hotel 'Drie Eiken' as a four star intermediate between hospital and home

In order to stimulate creative thinking and to come up with new ideas and concepts within healthcare, people who are capable of thinking outside the traditional frameworks of the healthcare sector are needed. As a cross-over with the creative sector would be very worthwhile for developing innovations, Innovation for Health gave designers the opportunity to present their work at the exhibition of Innovation for Health 2014! These projects consisted of visual concepts that show an innovative solution for a current complex problem within healthcare.

Nomination
With the Care hotel 'Drie Eiken', EGM architecten showed a four star intermediate between hospital and home. The project was nominated for this Conceptual Design Award. Care hotel 'Drie Eiken'

EGM architecten, in collaboration with LLOX architecten designed the Drie Eiken Care Hotel in Antwerp as the place to stay after hospital treatment before returning home. It has the allure of a four star hotel allowing patients to be "guests" with professional tailor-made care in a residential environment, 24/7. The hotel is literally planted into a hillside, blending into the environment and capturing the green surroundings inside the hotel. A large terrace with view of the area is situated on the south side.

The building appears compact, leaving as much space as possible for the landscape. Convenience, comfort and accessibility are the key elements. All bedrooms are fitted with a private bathroom, minibar, interactive TV-system, safe and a home automation system, including accommodation for the patient’s partner or carer. Large windows provide an open view on the surroundings and bring daylight into the room. The hotel includes all possible facilities for guests to relax and to recover.

The jury consisted of Mark Bloemendaal (ceo Implementation IQ and Healthcare Innovation Portal), Sabine Wildevuur, (head of creative carelab of Waag Society), Johan Wagenaar (director and curator of Het Instituut) and was led by Prof. Robert Zwijnenberg, director of The Arts and Genomics Centre (TAGC).

The winner of the Conceptual Design Award was Renee Scheepers with her project Revealing Maps of Cancer Care.
