Oncology hospital

Everything here is about the patient's experience

"An exceptionally warm, hopeful ambience has been created here. The Healing Environment philosophy is tangible in almost every room. Patients' responses range from praise to outright wild enthusiasm. For employees, it's a joy to work here." Luc Scheijmans, physician

As a specialist hospital, the Verbeeten Institute provides top clinical care in the areas of radiotherapeutic oncology and nuclear medicine. It supplies tailor-made care, with every effort focusing on the patient and his experience. That's why patients and employees have been directly involved in the design. In part, their input has led to the building as it is today: a building with a Healing Environment, friendly, safe and transparent. An environment in which both patients and employees feel comfortable.

In part, their input has led to the building as it is today: a building with a Healing Environment, friendly, safe and transparent. An environment in which both patients and employees feel comfortable.

Villa in a green environment

In order to provide even better care for its patients, the Verbeeten Institute has realized a new branch next to the Jeroen Bosch Hospital. It is a unique location, with a green environment with trees and meadows on one side, and the hospital and the busy city on the other side. The institute is a hybrid of these worlds: a villa in a green environment. The shape, scale and transparent character lend a unique identity to the building.

Healing Environment

The hospital was built according to the 'Healing Environment' principles: a comfortable and restful environment in which patients feel at ease. Inside, natural materials such as wood and brick create a pleasant atmosphere. The entrance hall has a double floor height, ensuring plenty of natural light and views. Comfortable sofas and chairs in warm colours give the appearance of a hotel lobby, rather than a hospital. Even in the radiation bunkers, the patient's experience has been taken into account. Patients can control their environment here, an important hallmark of the Healing Environment. For example, before entering the radiation room, patients can adjust the colour and intensity of the led-lighting themselves. This way, architecture can make a positive contribution to a patient's experience.

Open and transparent

The building reflects the organisation's openness. The glass façade ensures plenty of natural light and views of the surroundings. There are no stuffy waiting areas, but open spaces connected by the wavy roof. Views, situation and different ceiling heights provide every space withits own character. Even the radiation bunkers in the heart of the building have not been hidden away, but are clearly visible as a monolithic block.
