Extention of the Rusthof crematorium

Rusthof meets the changing wishes of the bereaved

We are living in a multicultural society in which customs around death vary by culture and religion. Crematorium Rusthof takes into account the different beliefs of the next of kin. Here, people can say goodbye to a loved one in their own way.

In a wooded area between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gelderse Vallei lies the Rusthof cemetery and crematorium. Here, next of kin with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds can say goodbye to the deceased in their own way. Today’s trend is customisation. This has been taken into account in the design of Crematorium Rusthof.

Contrast

The crematorium is part of the Rusthof cemetery. The EGM building has a very different appearance than the existing monumental buildings by ir. C.B. van der Tak, but has been carefully integrated into the original design in terms of landscape and urban planning.

Tailor-made

The client's wish to cater to the individual wishes and beliefs of the next of kin as much as possible was taken into account in the design. For example, the cremation room is visually separated from the large hall and reception rooms by a spacious patio and a partition wall. As a result of this, not everyone needs to be confronted with the cremation. In this way, different religions and cultural groups can experience the farewell in their own way.

Living room-like atmosphere

The main challenge was to create a ‘living room-like atmosphere’ in the hall. The large space has an intimate appearance due to the round shape, the use of natural materials, the moderate interior and subtle daylight. The view of the green surroundings enhances the comforting atmosphere.

24-hour mourning rooms

Six 24-hour mourning rooms have been realised in the north wing of the patio. Here, next of kin can say their farewell to a loved one day and night. The use of materials, colours, daylight and view ensure that the visitor experiences comfort. The coffee room has also been expanded. This can now be divided in two in order to accommodate two groups. Evening condolences can also be held. The renovations are part of the first phase of Rusthof's master plan to become the most beautiful funeral centre in the central Netherlands.
