Participation, protection, growth, encouragement, learning, making choices and working together. These rights form the basis for working with and supporting the young people who live in Teylingereind. The environment to accommodate and stimulate this has been designed with great care.

Forensisch Centrum Teylingereind is one of the five juvenile justice centres (JJIs) in the Netherlands. The centre includes, in addition to the care for 144 young people, various additional facilities, such as a school, sports hall and office functions. The square-shaped new building is an extension of the existing juvenile justice centre and consists of two buildings that enclose an outdoor sports field and courtyard. As a pupil, you now always move to the other buildings via this outdoor space. In addition to these two main buildings, the design also includes four detached pavilions that can accommodate a limitedly secured care for young people. Orientation and a sense of homeliness, safety are important in a juvenile justice centre.

Individual trajectories

Teylingereind offers each young person an individual trajectory to make a successful return to society. This trajectory helps young people to regain control over their own lives and make the right choices. Life does not stand still here, the stay at Teylingereind leads to development and personal growth through the care and attention provided, so that young people are able to successfully pick up their lives again. As a result, the risk of recidivism is low and society is enriched.

Feeling at home in a residential group

Much attention has been paid to the design of the residential group. This is set up as a traditional family home and not as a traditional juvenile justice centre. This was achieved by placing the bedrooms on the top floor and the living areas on the ground floor, bordering on their own outdoor space (garden). Warm and natural materials and colours such as orange and brown have been used here primarily.

Colorful orientation

At various places where the pupils move through the buildings, special colour use has been used. For example, the two staircases in the school building are yellow and orange, so it is always clear which side of the building you are on. The fresh blue colour is recognizable at the classrooms and the sports hall.
